Before

The kitchen, part of a rental apartment, was dated and lacking in warmth. Though functional, it needed a refresh to bring out its potential as a cosy and practical space. Key challenges included outdated flooring that dulled the room, limited storage solutions that left surfaces cluttered, and stark overhead lighting that did little to create an inviting atmosphere. Also, there was no space to sit down for a coffee or small meal. As it was a rental, any updates had to be non-structural and fully reversible.

Inspiration

The goal was to bring warmth and character to this rental kitchen while staying true to the client’s love for vintage cottage style. We crafted a moodboard inspired by “finca vibes,” blending vibrant sky and sea blues reminiscent of vintage Majolica tiles, with touches of lemon yellow and grounding black and white. To soften the look, we incorporated natural materials like wood and wicker, aiming for a cosy, Mediterranean-inspired atmosphere. This mix of colours and textures would bring personality to the space, creating a welcoming, functional kitchen with a timeless appeal.

Renovation

Transforming this rental kitchen on a minimal budget required creative, reversible solutions that would add style and functionality without any structural changes. Storage was a key focus: we sourced second-hand cabinets and shelves, upcycling them and installing them around the entrance door where they would not impact the natural light or be too visually overwhelming, while strategically leaving space below for the client’s cats’ feeding station. To refresh the outdated flooring, we applied stick-on tiles that added charm and durability. A new breakfast nook introduced a cosy seating area, complete with a small table, foldable chairs, and soft lighting to replace the harsh overhead fixture. Final touches, like painting around the nook, adding privacy blinds, and updating hardware, rounded out the “finca vibes” aesthetic.

After

The final result brought warmth, personality, and functionality to the kitchen, transforming it into an inviting space that felt both cosy and practical. The “finca vibes” palette of vibrant blues, yellows, and natural wood accents created a Mediterranean-inspired look, while the new lighting and painted accents made the room feel like a cheerful, personalised retreat.

It’s incredible how, with such ease and loving dedication, Tonja transformed my humble kitchen into a haven. Cooking is truly fun again!
